The African National Congress has denied reported differences between President Thabo Mbeki and his party deputy, Jacob Zuma, over ways to heal a rift within the party. The party’s national working committee said on Monday night this emerged from its weekly meeting held in Johannesburg earlier in the day.

They are tired of having to insist that shooting a dog and then having a party is not a favourite national pastime and of denying that their wine is made of fermented horse urine and that women are kept in cages.

A powerful earthquake shook northern Japan early on Tuesday, triggering small tsunami waves that struck towns along the north-eastern coast about 350km away. There were no immediate reports of damage or injuries. Japan’s Meteorological Agency said the magnitude-7,1 quake hit at 6.39am local time.

Australia’s only nuclear reactor was a possible target for alleged Islamic militants arrested for plotting a major attack, it was revealed on Monday. In a 21-page report, police investigators said members of the terror cell were stockpiling bomb-making materials as well as sizing up a possible strike on the reactor.

Spanish police have traced up to 42 suspected CIA operatives believed to have taken part in secret flights carrying detained or kidnapped Islamist terror suspects to interrogation centres and jails in Afghanistan, Egypt and elsewhere. Germany and Italy are already investigating similar flights.

French President Jacques Chirac acknowledged on Monday night that France’s 18 nights of urban violence have revealed a ”profound malaise” in society and launched an appeal to combat the ”poison” of racial discrimination. Chirac delivered his first formal address to the nation since the unrest started on October 27.

A powerful car bomb exploded outside a KFC restaurant in the southern Pakistan city of Karachi on Tuesday, killing at least three people and injuring 22 others, police said. The blast struck at about 8.45am local time, as commuters were heading to shops and offices in the crowded business hub.

Shareholders of Old Mutual plc, South Africa’s largest life insurer, have approved four separate resolutions allowing the company to implement its R38-billion offer for Swedish insurer Skandia, the company said on Monday. Old Mutual shareholders accepted a resolution to approve the bid for Skandia by a 92,4% favourable vote.
