Mbeki, Zuma in agreement, says ANC

The African National Congress has denied reported differences between President Thabo Mbeki and his party deputy, Jacob Zuma, over ways to heal a rift within the party. The party’s national working committee said on Monday night this emerged from its weekly meeting held in Johannesburg earlier in the day.

Powerful earthquake hits northern Japan

A powerful earthquake shook northern Japan early on Tuesday, triggering small tsunami waves that struck towns along the north-eastern coast about 350km away. There were no immediate reports of damage or injuries. Japan’s Meteorological Agency said the magnitude-7,1 quake hit at 6.39am local time.

Chirac admits riots reveal French malaise

French President Jacques Chirac acknowledged on Monday night that France’s 18 nights of urban violence have revealed a ”profound malaise” in society and launched an appeal to combat the ”poison” of racial discrimination. Chirac delivered his first formal address to the nation since the unrest started on October 27.

Bomb explodes outside KFC in Karachi

A powerful car bomb exploded outside a KFC restaurant in the southern Pakistan city of Karachi on Tuesday, killing at least three people and injuring 22 others, police said. The blast struck at about 8.45am local time, as commuters were heading to shops and offices in the crowded business hub.

Old Mutual shareholders support Skandia bid

Shareholders of Old Mutual plc, South Africa’s largest life insurer, have approved four separate resolutions allowing the company to implement its R38-billion offer for Swedish insurer Skandia, the company said on Monday. Old Mutual shareholders accepted a resolution to approve the bid for Skandia by a 92,4% favourable vote.
