Crisis talks over Bok contracts

The South African Rugby Players’ Association (Sarpa) will hold emergency talks with SA Rugby officials in Johannesburg on Thursday in a bid to avoid a potential Springbok player strike, Sarpa CEO Piet Heymans said on Wednesday. Strike threats were reported on Wednesday, but Heymans played down the possibility of such action.

White House awaits spy-leak fallout

The White House was on Wednesday struggling to carry on business as usual amid feverish speculation that top officials were facing criminal charges in a potentially crippling political scandal. A special federal prosecutor presented a grand jury with the results so far of his investigation into the leak two years ago of a CIA agent’s identity.

Blue Train, Trans Karoo collide head-on

Dozens of train passengers suffered injuries in an overnight head-on collision between the Trans Karoo express and the luxury Blue Train at Deelfontein. A police spokesperson said 74 people aboard the hotel-on-wheels and 182 travelling on the Trans Karoo express were injured in various degrees. The driver of the Trans Karoo was seriously hurt in the accident.

Eleven die in Dutch airport fire

At least 11 people were killed overnight in a fire at a building housing cells for people awaiting expulsion from The Netherlands at Amsterdam’s Schiphol airport, according to a new toll from the Dutch news agency ANP, quoting the justice ministry. Fifteen other people, including fire officers, were injured and taken to hospital.
