Why Benni gives Baxter a headache

Late on Friday afternoon, all the Bafana Bafana players apart from Benni McCarthy were ensconced in their camp in Ouagadougou, gearing themselves physically and mentally for Saturday’s vital World Cup qualifier against Burkina Faso. McCarthy has presented Stuart Baxter with a headache he hardly needs at this critical juncture.

Mighty Elephants work hard for victory

The Eastern Province (EP) Mighty Elephants gained a hard-earned 17-9 win over the Border Bulldogs in their Absa Currie Cup first-division rugby match played at the EP Rugby Union headquarters on Friday night after leading 14-0 at half-time. The match never really got off the ground, with both sides making many basic mistakes.

Scrappy Serena advances at US Open

Australian Open champion Serena Williams scrambled to a 6-3, 6-4 victory over Francesca Schiavone in New York on Friday to set up a possible fourth-round clash with elder sister Venus at the US Open tennis championships. Maria Sharapova, Lleyton Hewitt and Asian number one Paradorn Srichaphan also advanced.

Morale-boosting win for Bulls

The Blue Bulls scored nine tries and swamped the Leopards to take full points from their Currie Cup encounter at Loftus Versfeld on Friday night, easily winning the match 69-24. For the Bulls it was a morale-boosting win, and provided a big score line that they will need later on in the competition to try to make the semifinals.

Beckham warns Owen over place in line-up

David Beckham has warned Michael Owen that he cannot expect to walk straight back into England’s side for Wednesday’s World Cup qualifier away to Northern Ireland. Owen is suspended from Saturday’s match against Wales, and Beckham insisted that if the team play well without him, Sven-Goran Eriksson should stick to that line-up.

Malawi mom hacks HIV-positive baby to death

A 25-year-old woman has been arrested for allegedly hacking her nine-month old son to death with an axe and attempting suicide after they both tested positive for the Aids virus, police said on Friday. Police spokesperson Enock Livason said the woman and her son had tested positive for the virus at a government hospital.

Botswana govt restricts movement in reserve

Botswana’s government on Friday announced the temporary closure of southern and central parts of the Central Kalahari Game Reserve, saying this is necessary to contain an outbreak of contagious disease that endangers wildlife. But Survival International said the real reason is to restrict the movement of Basarwa tribesmen.

SA flight steward in Perth drug bust

A South African flight attendant appeared in an Australian court on Saturday on smuggling charges after 1kg of cocaine was found hidden in his luggage, news reports said on Saturday. Abdengo Morema Serane (26) arrived at Perth International airport on a flight from Johannesburg on Thursday.
