Tanzanian leader warns on globalisation

Globalisation threatens to ”exploit, denigrate and humiliate” Africa like slavery and colonialism once did, outgoing Tanzanian President Benjamin Mkapa said on Wednesday. Mkapa also criticised African leaders for paying lip service to the trade crisis — the continent’s global share is just 2% — without taking any real action.

Egyptian leader confident of election victory

Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak, seeking re-election to a fifth term, has voiced confidence that voters will choose his ”serious platform” over his rivals’ ”hollow slogans” in the September 7 poll. The 77-year-old president also told the Al-Ahram Weekly he will reject any foreign interference in the electoral process.

JSE rallies despite stronger rand

The JSE was roaring ahead just before noon on Thursday, taking its cue from stronger world markets. Petrochemicals group Sasol led the way as concerns about the affect of Hurricane Katrina continued to affect sentiment. By 11.56am, the all share index added 1,47%. Industrials and financials firmed 1,38% and 1,3% respectively, while the banks index was 1,88% in the black.

‘There is no chaos in SA Rugby’

Besieged South African Rugby Union president Brian van Rooyen has lashed out at vice-president Mike Stofile and president’s council member Oregan Hoskins for what he termed ”wild pronouncements”. Van Rooyen’s hastily convened press conference on Wednesday proved to be a show of defiance by the beleaguered rugby boss.

Nadeco sets its sights on fired IFP man

The National Democratic Convention (Nadeco) on Thursday confirmed it has approached Inkatha Freedom Party MPL Jabulani Maphalala to join its ranks. Maphalala, who is based at the University of Zululand, was fired by the IFP on Wednesday — apparently after allegations that he was going to defect to Nadeco.

Hlatshwayo outclasses Cassius Baloyi

Isaac ”Angle” Hlatshwayo became the new IBO lightweight champion when he won a unanimous points decision over Cassius Baloyi at Carnival City in Brakpan on Wednesday night. The new champion, who is now unbeaten in 23 professional fights, outclassed and outboxed his hapless opponent from the opening round.
