Pakistan disputes rise in quake death toll

Pakistani authorities on Thursday confirmed about 48 000 people died in the October 8 earthquake and said there were discrepancies in a higher toll of about 79 000 given by provincial authorities on Wednesday. The United Nations said the aid shortfall makes the situation worse than after the Indian Ocean tsunami last year.

Roddick loses as Nadal advances in Madrid

Andy Roddick blew a match point in the second set and lost 3-6, 7-6 (7), 7-6 (3) to Ivo Karlovic of Croatia in the Madrid Masters’ second round on Wednesday. It was Roddick’s first tour match since the United States Open’s first round in August, and Karlovic’s first win over the American after two defeats this year.

Reports: Cristiano Ronaldo held on rape claim

Manchester United winger Cristiano Ronaldo was arrested on Wednesday and questioned on suspicion of rape, reports said. Scotland Yard said two men were questioned in connection with an allegation of a serious sexual assault at a central London hotel, and one was arrested. Media reports said the man arrested was Ronaldo.

Lyon maintain perfect record

Lyon defeated Olympiakos 2-1 on Wednesday, leaving the four-time defending French champions as one of only three teams with perfect records in the Champions League. Inter Milan saw their perfect record blemished with a 2-0 loss at 2004 champions FC Porto. Two other teams won big — Chelsea and Real Madrid.

Bafana drop in world rankings

Like an ailing share on the stock market, Bafana Bafana on Wednesday slipped to 46th place in the Fifa world rankings — the most dire position in the past 10 years. South Africa had already touched a 10-year low in September, and a nightmare sequence of defeats has resulted in a further drop of four places in the past month.

Tennis bad boy Lleyton Hewitt’s attempt to show fans his softer side in a documentary has ended up with the world number three facing legal action in Australia brought by his former best friend. Hewitt has included footage of himself and Australian-rules football player Andrew McLeod visiting Aboriginal sacred sites together.

China, Russia report new bird-flu outbreaks

The World Health Organisation expressed concern on Thursday about the latest outbreak of bird flu in China as the ministry of agriculture revealed more than 91 000 birds had been culled. A Thai farmer has died from bird flu after contact with infected poultry, and in Russia, the virus has been discovered in the province of Tula.
