The United States will send four astronauts to the moon in 2018 in a return to its pioneering manned mission into space, Nasa administrator Michael Griffin announced on Monday. Nasa is to design a new rocket based on the technology from its ageing shuttles that are to be retired in 2010, Griffin said.

Staff at the Commission for Conciliation, Mediation and Arbitration (CCMA) on Monday accepted a 7% pay rise. The CCMA staff members went on strike last Wednesday, demanding a 6% salary increase (which rose by 1% after mediation) and equal pay for work of equal value.

Officially, Downing Street declined to comment on the outcome of Sunday’s German vote that left Gerhard Schröder and conservative challenger Angela Merkel both claiming victory.

Teacher training will not disrupt Gauteng schools this week despite the absence of thousands of teachers, provincial education minister Angie Motshekga said on Monday. As many as 12 000 out of 49 000 teachers in the province will be attending a workshop on the new curriculum for grades 10 to 12.

Two suicide car bombers killed 10 people when they struck checkpoints south of Baghdad on Monday on a road used by thousands of Iraqi Shi’ite pilgrims making their way by foot to the holy city of Karbala. The bombers struck separate road checkpoints halfway between Baghdad and Karbala, a defence ministry official said.

Telecommunications group Telkom has suspended three executives — Pinky Moholi, Belinda Williams and Oupa Magashula — pending an inquiry, it emerged on Monday. Telkom corporate communications executive Lulu Letlape said the three executives were asked to take a "leave of absence" pending an internal probe.
