Summit on Côte d’Ivoire crisis ends

West African leaders brought a summit on the crisis in Côte d’Ivoire to an end Friday but warned that they would not immediately make public their decision on how to avert a looming political crisis in the bitterly divided country. Ivorian President Laurent Gbagbo’s mandate expires on October 30.

Libya seeks ‘friendship’ with US

Libyan leader Moammar Gadaffi said on Friday that his country seeks ”friendship” with the United States and that the time for confrontation with the superpower has passed, according to comments aired on official television. ”America equally needs us and its oil companies can now work in Libya,” Gadaffi said.

More bad news for Bafana

When it comes to problems piling up for Bafana Bafana, the old dictum that ”it never rains, but it pours” would not be inappropriate. The Blue Bulls secured their place in the semifinals of this year’s Currie Cup competition with a flawless 59-0 victory over Griqualand West at Loftus Versfeld on Friday night. The defending Currie Cup champions were ruthless in their execution and demolished a Griqua pack that almost upset the Lions a week ago in Kimberley.

Pumas fight for points

The Pumas beat the Griffons 40-27 in a first-division Absa Currie Cup semifinal played at Witbank on Friday night. They will face either the Falcons or Elephants in the final. The half-time score was 16-13. The Pumas have only lost two games in their group but were made to fight for their points.

Vabaza holds on to WBA title

South Africa’s southpaw fighter Gabula Vabaza successfully defended his WBA super-bantam title when he outpointed his Ghanaian challenger Anyetei Laryea during their title contest at the Graceland Casino in Secunda in the early hours of Saturday. Vabaza had to chase his challenger in an attempt to connect him with some blows.

Wenger hits out at bookmakers

Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger believes the decision by bookmakers to pay out on Chelsea defending their Premiership title will backfire and spur his side to challenge their London rivals. While Chelsea are 11 points clear of Arsenal and 10 clear of Manchester United, Wenger insists the race is far from over.

Ruling New Zealand party pursues minority govt

New Zealand’s ruling Labour Party seems set to form a new minority government after the Electoral Office confirmed on Saturday it has the biggest number of seats in the nation’s Parliament. Labour took 50 seats in the September 17 election, two more than the main opposition National Party, final election results show.
