The trade union Solidarity on Wednesday announced that it will go ahead with strike action against Nationwide Airline following a deadlock in negotiations. Solidarity spokesperson Jaco Kleynhans said the union has given Nationwide a 48-hour strike warning, which will expire on Friday.

Israeli threats to prevent next year’s Palestinian elections unless Hamas is disarmed could lead to a collapse of the present ceasefire and a new wave of attacks from the West Bank, the militant group has warned. Last week, Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon demanded that Hamas disarm and renounce its charter.

Crude oil prices climbed toward a barrel on Thursday as Hurricane Rita closed in on Texas, raising fears it would hit key production facilities along the United States Gulf Coast that were largely untouched by Hurricane Katrina’s onslaught three weeks ago. The category-five hurricane is expected to strike Texas on Saturday.

At least 64 people died and hundreds of thousands were displaced after powerful storms left a trail of devastation across the Indian and Bangladeshi coasts in the Bay of Bengal, officials said on Wednesday. The southern Indian state of Andhra Pradesh bore the brunt of the storms, which killed 58 people in the region.

A United States airliner with 146 people on board made a dramatic but safe emergency landing on Wednesday amid a hail of sparks and smoke after its nose wheels jammed wildly out of alignment. Sparks, flames and a pall of thick smoke erupted from the tyres as they scraped along the tarmac.

South Africa needed more black accountants, President Thabo Mbeki told the South African Institute of Chartered Accountants (Saica) on Wednesday evening. Mbeki was speaking at a dinner marking Saica’s 25th anniversary. ”I think we will agree that we should mobilise more resources” to help train black accountants, Mbeki said.
