Investigative unit saves govt billions

Work to uncover and eradicate corruption in the 2004/05 financial year has saved the government projected future losses of nearly R3,5-billion, the Special Investigating Unit said on Thursday. This was calculated on the premise that malpractices exposed during the year were likely to have continued on average for ten more years.

Strength in numbers for Ethiopia’s alliance

The four parties that make up Ethiopia’s largest opposition alliance, the Coalition for Unity and Democracy (CUD) have merged to form one party, an official of the coalition said on Thursday. The All Ethiopia Unity Party, the Union of Ethiopia Democracy Party, Rainbow Ethiopia and the Ethiopian Democratic League announced their unification on Saturday.

Hitler’s watercolours to go on display in Italy

High drama as EU sets talks on Turkish entry

European Union foreign ministers will meet in Luxembourg on October 2 in an eleventh-hour bid to finalise guidelines for membership talks with Turkey, scheduled to start a day later. Vietnam typhoon toll at least 51

Authorities have identified 24 of the 51 people who were killed this week in flash floods in northern Vietnam, officials said on Thursday. The total number of fatalities from flash flooding that came on the tail end of Typhoon Damrey is still unknown because some areas remain cut off, an official from Yen Bai province said.
