First National Bank (FNB) is the first major bank in South Africa to offer sharia-compliant banking facilities through its IslamicFinance bank accounts. According to Ebi Patel, CEO of Wesbank Islamic Finance at FNB, banking services have traditionally been out of the reach of devout Muslims.

Veteran all-rounder Chris Cairns has been dropped from the New Zealand one-day cricket team to tour South Africa next month, but has vowed to recapture his form to achieve his dream of playing in the 2007 World Cup. The United States military told an al-Jazeera cameraman being held at Guantánamo Bay that he would be released as long as he agreed to spy on journalists at the Arabic news channel, according to documents seen by The Guardian. The journalist has been in the prison without charge for three-and-a-half years after being accused by the US of being a terrorist, allegations he denies.

KwaZulu-Natal Premier S’bu Ndebele has pledged to lead a delegation of top ANC leaders to support axed deputy president Jacob Zuma when he appears in court on October 11, the Sunday Times reports. Ndebele, a close ally of President Thabo Mbeki, has recently been under pressure from his mainly Zuma-supporting colleagues in the province, said the newspaper.
