Big Ron sees no one stopping Chelsea

Ron Atkinson, manager of Manchester United when they opened the 1985/86 season with ten victories and still finished fourth after being hit by a string of injuries, sees no one to match Chelsea’s huge world-class squad this season. ”Chelsea have such a big squad that it will take something major to disrupt them,” he said.

SA school dropout rate ‘exceptionally high’

South Africa’s school dropout rate was ”exceptionally high”, the Democratic Alliance said on Sunday. ”According to the United Nations Human Development Programme (UNHDP), the proportion of grade one students reaching grade five declined from 75% in 1990/91 to 65% in 2001/02,” DA MP Helen Zille said in a statement on Sunday.

Namibian farmworkers face eviction

About 70 Namibian farmworkers and their families face an uncertain future after the first expropriation of a white-owned farm by the government and are fighting to retain their jobs and homes. The Namibia Farmworkers’ Union has taken up their case and says the workers, who face penury and homelessness according to the present owner, cannot be cast away on the roadside.

Gold touches fresh 17-year high

Spot gold on Monday touched a fresh 17-year high of $461,70 a troy ounce on strong buying of the metal, despite a lower euro, traders said. At 10.45am, gold was quoted at $461,35/oz, up $2,55/oz from its previous close. The euro was last at $1,2129 from the unit’s previous close of $1,2160.

Leavander Johnson had worked a long time for his big night, 16 years to be exact. His first title defence turned tragic, however, leaving the veteran boxer in a fight that most with his kind of injury don’t win. Johnson was in a drug-induced coma on Sunday following emergency brain surgery he underwent just minutes after losing his lightweight title the night before.

Bolton snatched victory against Manchester City on Sunday after an injury time penalty from Gary Speed earned the Trotters a 1-0 win at the City of Manchester stadium. Richard Dunne’s needless handball gifted Sam Allardyce’s men the chance to take the three points and send City, who hit the woodwork four times, reeling to their first defeat of the season.

Russians celebrate after retaining Fed Cup title

Elena Dementieva and Dinara Safina teamed up to help the Russian Federation retain the Fed Cup title on Sunday, beating Amelie Mauresmo and Mary Pierce of France 6-4, 1-6, 6-3 in doubles to give the Russians a 3-2 win. Dementieva, who also won both of her singles matches, sank to her knees in celebration after Mauresmo hit a forehand long on match point at Roland Garros.

Dlamini-Zuma signs accord with Argentina

Minister of Foreign Affairs Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma has signed an accord with Argentina to regulate political, economic and trade relations between the two countries. She signed the Joint South African-Argentina Binational Commission Agreement with her Argentinian counterpart Rafael Bielsa on Sunday in New York.
