One of the architectural jewels of late 19th century Paris — the enormous steel and glass exhibition hall known as the Grand Palais — opens to the public on Saturday for the first time in 12 years following a monumental face-lift. Closed for safety reasons in 1993 after a metal bolt fell from the ceiling, the fin-de-siêcle masterpiece has been renovated at a cost to the state of more than €70-million.

African Union officials were to launch a final round of peace talks in the Nigerian capital Abuja on Thursday to bring an end to slaughter and starvation in the war-torn western Sudanese region of Darfur. AU mediator Sam Ibok told Agence France Presse that the opening ceremony would be held at around 6pm (5pm GMT) but could not confirm whether all the delegates had arrived.

Two KwaZulu-Natal ambulance men had a narrow escape on Wednesday night when their ambulance was hijacked by gunmen. Captain Jabulani Mdletshe said driver Senzo Mkhumbuzi and colleague Paul Hlope were called out to Sonto Reserve in Mseleni to pick up a sick man at around 10pm.

Wayne Rooney’s ejection for sarcastically applauding a referee was a red card waiting to happen. The talented but volatile teenager was sent off playing for Manchester United in a 0-0 Champions League tie at Villarreal on Wednesday. It’s the same sort of petulance he showed playing for England in last week’s stunning 1-0 World Cup qualifying loss to Northern Ireland.

Both Ernie Els and Retief Goosen have committed themselves to play at this year’s South African Airways Open which will take place at The Links at Fancourt in George from December 15 to 18. Knee surgery following an injury has kept Els out of action since July but he is hoping to be back in competition around the end of November and expects to be fully recovered in time for the Open.

City officials in the capital of ex-Soviet Georgia voted to rename a street after United States President George Bush, an official statement released on Thursday said. The decision to rename the rundown residential street was taken at a council meeting on Wednesday.

Opec has cut its estimate for the expected increase in global oil demand this year for the fifth time in a row, with the increase now expected to be 1,7% from the 2004 figure, its monthly report showed on Thursday. Global demand is now forecast to be an average 83,5-million barrels per day.

The current government of Côte d’Ivoire should remain in place until elections are held, even if this does not happen by October 31 as planned, South Africa said on Thursday. Regarding the rejection of South Africa’s mediation by the New Forces, Lekota said the country will continue its work until its mandate is withdrawn.
