Real Madrid coach Vanderlei Luxemburgo insists the team mustn’t panic in the face of a dismal start to the season that continued with a 3-0 Champions League defeat to Lyon. The thrashing at Stade Gerland on Wednesday came four days after the team’s 3-2 home loss against newly promoted Celta Vigo in the Spanish league.

The price of gold is set to hit $480 an ounce by the end of the year as demand reaches a four-year high, particularly in India and the jewellery sector, a metals consultancy predicted on Wednesday. Gold was trading for $448 an ounce on Wednesday on the precious metals market in London.

The ostrich industry in South Africa has welcomed Tuesday’s announcement by Minister of Agriculture and Land Affairs Thoko Didiza, declaring the country free of avian influenza. However, it warned that this does not translate into an automatic resumption of ostrich-product exports.

The typhoid outbreak at Delmas in Mpumalanga is a clear reminder of the importance of environmental epidemiology, a senior health official said on Wednesday. Deputy Director General of Health Kamy Chetty said: ”It very clearly brings out issues of environmental health and its health impact on people.”

The Cape High Court on Wednesday overturned a decision of the United Democratic Movement to expel seven of its members, including deputy leader Malizole Diko. The ruling means that two MPs and five MPLs can cross the floor before the floor-crossing period ends at midnight on Thursday evening.

A new airline will soon take to the skies in Kuwait but only the leanest of the Gulf’s growing number of carriers will survive the cut-throat competition in the region’s oil-rich market, analysts said on Wednesday. Most of the nine airlines owned by the six Gulf Arab states, which this year are forecast to boast -billion in windfall oil revenues, depend on government support and tax breaks.

The JSE was firmer in noon trade on Wednesday, despite basket selling by futures players and a slightly stronger rand. Heavyweight dual-listed stocks led the market’s upside. By 11.59am, the all share and all share industrial indices added 0,27% and 0,44% respectively. Financials firmed 0,36% and the banks index was 0,79% better.

A contingent of 42 members of the South African Police Service left from Lanseria airport on Wednesday morning to perform duties in Sudan, police management said. This would bring to 85 the number of SAPS members doing duty in various parts of Sudan, said the office of national police Commissioner Jackie Selebi.

Argentine striker Carlos Tevez’s complaints about bad soccer refereeing in Brazil were taken personally by some women who are threatening to sue him for discrimination. Tevez said in a televised interview last week that Brazilian league referees often persecuted Argentine players, and criticised the female line judges in Corinthians’ 3-2 loss to Sao Paulo in the Brazilian national championship.
