Brilliant Henry stuns Irish

A brilliant goal by Thierry Henry gave 1998 World Cup winners France a vital 1-0 victory over the Republic of Ireland in Dublin on Wednesday in their 2006 World Cup qualifier and left the Irish with a mountain to climb. Henry’s goal gave France their first-ever World Cup qualifier victory in the Irish capital.

Celtic, Arrows in entertaining draw

Bloemfontein Celtic and Golden Arrows played out an exciting goalless draw in an entertaining Premier Soccer League encounter at Vodacom Park in Bloemfontein on Wednesday night. In other matches, Santos went down 1-0 against Ajax Cape Town, and Silver Stars and Jomo Cosmos laboured to a 1-1 draw.

Davenport, Mauresmo out as Agassi forges ahead

Second-seeded Lindsay Davenport and number three Amelie Mauresmo were sent packing on Wednesday as Elena Dementieva and Mary Pierce set up a semifinal clash at the United States Open tennis championships. Meanwhile, Andre Agassi electrified the US Open on Wednesday with a battling quarterfinal win over a man 10 years his junior.

Alonso out to make history

The stage is set to welcome the youngest formula-one world champion this weekend. Fernando Alonso will be racing on his favorite circuit at the Belgian Grand Prix. He knows another excellent drive combined with a less-than-sterling result for hard-luck Kimi Raikkonen could give him the title at age 24.

Not disgraced, but beaten again

They were not disgraced, but Bafana Bafana were well beaten by a German team that caught alight with three goals in nine minutes after half-time for what was ultimately a comfortable 4-2 victory in Bremen, northern Germany, on Wednesday night. Bafana performed with spirited gusto in the opening half.

Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak was expected on Thursday to win a fifth term in power after an election tipped as a major democratic step but marred by reports of widespread fraud. As vote counting began, Wednesday’s historic election drew a barrage of fraud allegations from Mubarak’s rivals and independent monitors.

Govt plans no action on fuel price, exchange rate

The government is not planning any dramatic policy changes in respect of intervention in the fuel price and exchange rate, ministers said on Wednesday. During a briefing at Parliament by ministers forming part of Cabinet’s economic cluster, Minister of Trade and Industry Mandisi Mpahlwa said the exchange rate is an ongoing debate.

Another power failure hits Jo’burg

Power was back on in various parts of Johannesburg after a blackout on Wednesday night. Westdene, Auckland Park, Melville, Brixton, Riverlea and Langlaagte were all said to be in the dark after the earlier blackout. City Power said two sub-stations experiencing electrical faults were the cause of the power failure.
