New car sales break record in August

New car sales for August reached the highest single monthly sales total on record, the National Association of Automobile Manufacturers of South Africa (Naamsa) said on Friday. Assisted by strong consumer demand and purchases by the car-rental industry, new car sales rose to 35 770 units.

Five South Africans trapped in New Orleans

Five South Africans are believed to be trapped in the hurricane-stricken city of New Orleans, the Department of Foreign Affairs said on Friday. Thousands of people are reported to have died, and about one million displaced, when the category-four Hurricane Katrina hit the United States Gulf Coast this week.

Guard killed in attempted Rosebank Mall robbery

A security guard was shot dead and two others wounded in a shootout at the Rosebank Mall, Johannesburg, on Friday. Police spokesperson Superintendent Chris Wilken told reporters at the scene that an attempted robbery took place at 10.55am. It appeared as though between four and seven suspects were involved in the attempted robbery.

British Prime Minister Tony Blair’s father received an odd, impersonal response to a letter he sent his son congratulating him on being elected into government in 1997, the BBC revealed on Friday. Tim Allan, a former Downing Street communications adviser, described the incident in a new BBC Radio 4 series.

Naked ramblers walk into trouble

A couple trying to walk the length of Britain in the nude were due to appear in court on Friday after being grabbed by police south of Edinburgh following a complaint by a member of the public. So-called "Naked Rambler" Stephen Gough (46) and his girlfriend, Melanie Roberts (34), were arrested for an alleged breach of the peace.

SACP meeting to discuss Zuma commission

The South African Communist Party started a two-day meeting on Friday to discuss issues including a proposed commission of inquiry into claims of a plot against Jacob Zuma. Party spokesperson Kaizer Mohau said the Congress of South African Trade Unions’ stance on the matter would also be discussed.

Court reverses IFP expulsion

Expelled Inkatha Freedom Party MPL Jabulani Maphalala should be reinstated as a full member of the party and the legislature, the Pietermaritzburg High Court ordered on Friday. Meanwhile, the United Democratic Movement lost its finance spokesperson on Friday when the MP crossed the floor to the Democratic Alliance.
