Moore and more

This week, Moore’s Law reached its 40th birthday. Well, it’s 40 years since Electronics magazine published an article by Gordon Moore, co-founder of Intel, entitled ”Cramming more components on to integrated circuits”. Moore had noticed that the number of components on a chip had doubled, from 30 to 60, in a year.

The source of inspiration

The British government should look to the open source movement for more than its software, an influential think tank said on Wednesday. Wide Open, a pamphlet published by Demos, suggests that habits of sharing knowledge through loose communities of interest, such as the Wikipedia encyclopaedia, could improve law-making, standards in the media and health education.

Age of insecurity

Even United States President George Bush is paranoid about sending e-mail. At a recent briefing with newspaper editors, he was asked about implications of the US’s Freedom of Information Act. He remarked that he doesn’t send e-mails to his family for fear of them ending up in the wrong hands.

No goals for Rangers, Wits

Relegation candidates Manning Rangers and Wits University shared the spoils when they played to a goalless draw in a Castle Premiership encounter at Chatsworth Stadium on Wednesday night. The home side should have won this game in the first half, but were let down by their strikers.

Rand, US markets knock JSE

The JSE Securities Exchange was weaker in noon trade on Thursday, dragged down by a stronger rand. A poor performance on Wall Street overnight added to the negativity. By 11.59am, the all share and all share industrial indices shed 0,74% and 0,75% respectively.

Titans victory takes them into final

The Titans won through to a home final in the Standard Bank Pro20 cricket competition when they snatched a thrilling victory over the Lions at Supersport Park in Centurion on Wednesday. They beat the Lions by four wickets with one ball to spare in front of a capacity crowd of 11 000 in the first semifinal.

Arsenal slow Chelsea title charge

Defending champions Arsenal slowed Chelsea’s charge to their first league title for 50 years with a 0-0 tie at Stamford Bridge on Wednesday. Other results included Liverpool winning 2-1 at Portsmouth; Norwich beating Newcastle 2-1; Aston Villa and Charlton tied 0-0; and Blackburn edging Crystal Palace 1-0.

Smith mum on Pollock, Rudolph

South Africa captain Graeme Smith is playing his cards close to his chest and shedding no light on the chances of veteran fast-bowling all-rounder Shaun Pollock and left-handed batsman Jacques Rudolph playing in the third Test against West Indies. Smith has admitted that Pollock is short of serious match practice.
