Iraq in diplomatic row as violence erupts

At least 46 people died in violence in Iraq on the second anniversary of the United States-led invasion of the country as a diplomatic row erupted between Baghdad and Amman. Iraq was plunged into diplomatic crisis with Jordan, with both countries recalling their envoys following accusations of a Jordanian being involved in a suicide bombing.

Nigerian oil workers renew strike ultimatum

Nigeria’s main oil unions backed down from calling an immediate strike to protest the use of casual labour on Monday but launched a new 21-day ultimatum to international energy giants and the government. A disruption to Nigeria’s exports will send a shockwave through markets at a time when oil prices are already near their all-time high.

Floods kill nearly 200 in Afghanistan

United States military helicopters airlifted stranded families to safety and aid agencies distributed vital food after devastating floods in Afghanistan left nearly 200 people dead, officials said on Monday. Torrents of melting snow and fierce rains caused rivers to burst their banks in many parts of the poverty-stricken country.

Uefa takes action against Chelsea

European football’s governing body, Uefa, has opened disciplinary proceedings against Chelsea and the club’s manager, Jose Mourinho, on charges of bringing the game into disrepute. The action follows comments and statements made by Mourinho and Chelsea after their game against Barcelona at the Nou Camp on February 23.

Namibia swears in new president

President-elect Hifikepunye Pohamba was sworn in on Monday as Namibia’s second president since independence, succeeding veteran leader Sam Nujoma who held power in the Southern African country for 15 years. Pohamba took the oath to uphold the Constitution before 20 000 people assembled at a stadium in Windhoek.
