Kebble case struck from court roll

Mining magnate Roger Kebble’s fraud case was struck from the roll of the Johannesburg Regional Court on Wednesday. According to the charge sheet, Kebble faced 62 counts of fraud relating to allegedly inflated invoices issued to Durban Roodepoort Deep (DRD), on which DRD paid Skilled Labour Brokers. The excess money of about R7-million was allegedly in Kebble’s account.

United States film star Leonardo DiCaprio revealed in a German women’s magazine that he hopes one day to find a woman who is ”at least half as good” as his mother. In the interview appearing in the Frau im Spiegel magazine, the 30-year-old actor says he puts a lot of importance on such qualities as friendship and humour in a relationship.

Widespread selling knocks JSE

The JSE Securities Exchange (JSE) was a red deluge in noon trade on Wednesday as the profit-taking seen over the previous two days continued. A recovery in the rand to R6 per dollar added to the negative picture and decliners outnumbered advancers on the all-share index by about five to one.

Mbeki, Manuel, Mboweni to attend WEF meeting

South African President Thabo Mbeki, Minister of Finance Trevor Manuel, Minister of Trade and Industry Mandisi Mpahlwa and South African Reserve Bank Governor Tito Mboweni will lead a high-level delegation to the annual World Economic Forum (WEF) meeting in Davos, Switzerland, sources confirmed on Wednesday.

Zim authorities go after wife of jailed MP

Zimbabwe authorities have resuscitated a three-year-old charge for a minor misdemeanour against the wife of a jailed opposition MP. Heather Bennett, whose husband, Roy, pushed Justice Minister Patrick Chinamasa to the ground, was summoned to appear in court Tuesday on charges of possessing two-way radios without a licence.

Durban doctors ready to help tsunami victims

At least 15 Durban-based medical specialists have offered their services to a local welfare group, the Gift of the Givers Foundation, as it prepares for a mercy flight to tsunami victims in Somalia. The foundation’s director, Dr Imtiaaz Sooliman, said Gift of the Givers is ready to leave with 40 tonnes of food, medical supplies and water.

Yukos shareholder pledges court fight

A core shareholder in the company that owns about 60% of the shattered oil giant Yukos promised in an interview published on Wednesday to sue Russian authorities for the destruction of what was once the nation’s biggest oil producer. Leonid Nevzlin is also wanted by Russian prosecutors in connection with a murder investigation.

Silent heroes’ welcome for deaf sport stars

South Africa’s Deaflympic team, with 19 medals from competition in Australia, were greeted by a silent heroes’ welcome at Johannesburg International airport on Tuesday afternoon. Pupils from St Vincent’s School for the Deaf — waved their hands in celebration (the way deaf people applaud) as the sports stars entered the arrivals hall.

Men’s hockey claim series win

The South African men’s hockey team claimed a series win over the touring English side following their 3-1 victory in the fourth and final Test at the Tshwane University of Technology on Tuesday night. Ian Symons scored first for the home side, from a penalty corner in the 27th minute.
