The Eastern Cape health department has announced a R4-million plan to help deal with perennial cholera outbreaks, which have since 2002 claimed the lives of 83 people and hospitalised another 6 000 in the region. A departmental spokesperson said 22 specialised motorbikes are going to help combat outbreaks.

At least five people have died and 105 been taken ill as a cholera outbreak in the northern part of Burundi’s capital has spread since the middle of the month, a United Nations official said on Thursday. A spokesperson for the United Nations Operation in Burundi said 16 new cholera cases were reported on Wednesday.

Border police in the West African country of Benin have rescued 14 boys and a girl who were being smuggled into neighbouring Nigeria for work, a police officer said on Thursday. The boys had been destined for labour in the Abeokuta quarries, just over the border, while the girl would have been employed as a domestic servant.
