The JSE Securities Exchange (JSE) was marginally weaker at midday on Tuesday in a currency- and order-driven market. Volumes were reasonable and up considerably on Monday as trade normalised after the Christmas holidays. By 11,59am, the all-share index was off 0,17%. The gold-mining index slumped 1,51%.

NHN Corporation, the operator of South Korea’s leading internet search engine Naver, has launched a new desktop search tool designed to crush competition from United States rivals. The new service allows computer users to find files on their hard drives as well as on the internet using free software launched from an icon on the task bar of Microsoft’s Windows operating system.

Dual-listed Telkom, South Africa’s largest broadband provider, announced on Tuesday that it is conducting trials on next-generation WiMAX broadband wireless connectivity. The trials are part of ongoing efforts to find a solution that is expected to lead to high-speed, broadband wireless access across several kilometres for Telkom customers.

The Citizen newspaper on Tuesday admitted it had been taken in by a hoax after it published pictures showing people fleeing what they said was the tsunami in Sri Lanka. Acting editor Martin Williams said the newspaper regretted being taken in by the hoax.

But the P2P community has responded by stepping up the levels of encryption and anti-detection mechanisms, and the near future will probably see a breed of P2P file sharing tools that make detection virtually impossible.

A man who was beaten, stabbed and castrated before being thrown down a 5m-deep manhole was in a stable condition in the Johannesburg hospital on Monday night, emergency management services reported.
