Ukraine PM refuses to accept election defeat

Ukraine’s bitter presidential election took a new twist on Monday night when the vanquished government candidate, Viktor Yanukovich, refused to accept defeat and vowed to challenge the victory of opposition leader Viktor Yushchenko. With most votes counted, preliminary results give Yushchenko an unassailable lead.

4 South Africans die in tsunami disaster

Two more South Africans have died in disaster-stricken Phuket, Thailand, bringing the total number to four, says the Department of Foreign Affairs. Meanwhile, a rescue team will fly to Phuket on Tuesday morning to bring back 198 a South Africans.

    SA take commanding lead in Test

    Ably assisted by the tail-enders, Jacques Kallis spearheaded an outstanding performance by South Africa to give them a first innings lead of 193 runs on the second day of the second Test at Kingsmead on Monday. At close of play, England were 30 without loss in their second innings, and were still 163 runs behind.

    Sri Lanka to continue NZ cricket tour

    Sri Lanka’s cricket tour of New Zealand will proceed with a revised itinerary following devastating tidal waves which killed more than 12 000 people in the island nation. The second of five limited-overs internationals has been rescheduled and the start dates of the team’s two test matches in January may be
    pushed back by several days.

    We can still win it, says Jennings

    Sublime batting from Marcus Trescothick and former South African Andrew Strauss put England into a commanding position at the end of the third day of the second Test against South Africa at Kingsmead on Tuesday. But South African coach Ray Jennings was confident that South Africa could still win the Test.

    Africa counts cost of tidal waves

    Hundreds of people died and entire villages and towns disappeared when tidal waves hit Somalia’s coastline along its central and northeastern regions, a Somali presidential spokesperson said on Monday. In the Indian Ocean Island of Seychelles two fishermen went missing and four Seychellois were hospitalised.

    South Africans die in tsunami disaster

    Two South Africans have been confirmed killed in Phuket island off Thailand, following an earthquake and subsequent tsunamis that hit Southeast Asia on Sunday, the department of foreign affairs said on Monday. At least 300 South Africans are believed to be stranded in Thailand.
