Last-ditch battle for white Zim farmers

Five years after Zimbabwe launched a controversial land-grab programme to redress colonial imbalances, thousands of white farmers have mounted a last-ditch battle to fight a state bid to have them legally endorsed. ”We are fighting an attempt to legitimise an illegal process,” said Mike Clark, an official of the Commercial Farmers’ Union.

Daughter turns in alleged US serial killer

A 31-year hunt for a sadistic serial killer known as BTK appeared to have ended in Kansas at the weekend with the arrest of a man who was turned in by his daughter. Dennis Rader (59) a married father of two and a former church leader, was arrested in Wichita, Kansas, in connection with at least 10 murders dating back to 1974.

SA’s top luxury train back on track

The world-famous Blue Train is back in full operation after one set of carriages was withdrawn in March 2003 because of fire damage, Spoornet said on Monday. ”The fire-detection system on the damaged train set has now been updated and improved with the latest technology,” Dorcas Ledwaba, manager of the Blue Train, said in a statement.

Giant snowball crushes boy

A 10-year-old boy has died in Scotland after being crushed by a giant snowball rolling down a hill, police and reports said on Monday. In what appeared to be ”a tragic accident”, the schoolboy was playing with friends when a ”giant snowball” they had been making rolled down a hill and engulfed him, a police spokesperson said.

Majestic play from Zim’s Cayeux at Vodacom Tour

A majestic course record 11-under-par 61 from Zimbabwean Marc Cayeux saw him run away with the season-ending Vodacom Tour Championship at the par-72 Country Club layout on Sunday. Going into the final round, a playoff looked the most likely scenario but Cayeux literally floored his opposition to end the tournament on 20-under par 268.

IFP puts Johannesburg mayor on notice

The Inkatha Freedom Party (IFP) on Sunday gave Johannesburg Mayor Amos Masondo 14 days to respond to a memorandum of demands that include the upgrading of hostels in Johannesburg. The demands also include the upgrading of electricity power in hostels before the start of winter and the formation of a anti-corruption unit.

Drogba, Kezman lead Chelsea to victory

Didier Drogba and Mateja Kezman scored in extra time on Sunday to help Chelsea take the League Cup with a 3-2 win over Liverpool. Drogba poked the ball in from close range in the 16th minute of extra time from a Glen Johnson throw-in. Kezman added a second goal five minutes later, awkwardly tapping the ball over the line from a Eidur Gudjohnsen cross.

Teenager helps SA reach Cosafa Cup finals

France-based teenager Katlego Mphela scored as South Africa edged Mauritius 1-0 on Sunday to reach the Cosafa Cup finals. Racing Strasbourg striker Mphela drilled a deflected free kick past goalkeeper Nicolas Doro after 35 minutes at the King George V Stadium to clinch first place in group A of the new-look Southern Africa football championship.

Ogilvy wins first PGA Tour title

Australian Geoff Ogilvy drained an 18-foot birdie putt on the second play-off hole on Sunday to win his first United States PGA Tour title in the -million Tucson event. Kevin Na, the youngest player on tour, and Mark Calcavecchia were in the play-off with Ogilvy after finishing 72 holes at 19-under-par 269.
