There appeared to be a ”conspiracy of silence” between companies, political parties and foreign governments over party funding, the Cape High Court heard on Thursday. ”The most glaring omission in South Africa in relation to electoral processes … is the fact that there are no specific rules around the disclosure of private funding which political parties received,” said advocate John Butler.

Australian police admitted on Thursday they are mystified by a spate of apparent attacks on homes using frozen chickens as missiles. Police in Newcastle, about 100km north of Sydney, said chicken carcasses have damaged at least three suburban homes in recent weeks. They said the chickens hit the homes with great force.

Britain’s Foreign Office reacted with shock and sadness at the news of the fatal shooting of a British journalist in the Somali capital Mogadishu on Wednesday. Kate Peyton, a 39-year-old producer based in Johannesburg, died while undergoing surgery at the Medina hospital after she was gunned down by unknown attackers outside a hotel.

Eritrea is to demand the return from Ethiopia of hundreds of archeological artefacts taken from ancient sites in the 1960s, an official said on Thursday, threatening a new row between the feuding Horn of Africa neighbours. Asmara also will petition Italy for the return of objects it says were taken by Italian nationals.

South African real wholesale trade sales, excluding diamonds, rose by 21,7% year-on-year (y/y) in November 2004 after rising by a revised 19,8% y/y (original estimate 17,1% y/y) in October 2004, Statistics South Africa reported on Thursday. The original estimate had been at 17,1% y/y.

Nominated for two Grammy Awards, the voices of South Africa’s most famous Zulu group, Ladysmith Black Mambazo, are as much in demand today as they were 40 years ago. The Zulu group’s Raise Your Spirit Higher has been nominated in the best traditional world music and best surround sound categories of the Grammys, to be awarded on Sunday.
