Kaizer Chiefs revived their challenge for the Castle Premiership title after a resounding 3-0 victory over Jomo Cosmos at Royal Bafokeng Sports Palace in Phokeng near Rustenburg on Wednesday night. A moment of silence was observed prior to the start of the game in honour of former Cosmos and Orlando Pirates midfielder Vusi Mncwango.

Supersport United were held to a 0-0 draw by Silver Stars in a Premier Soccer League encounter at Loftus Stadium on Wednesday night. Stars threatened first through Solomon Mathe early on, but United’s Calvin Marlin reacted well to clear the danger. Marlin was tested again in the 28th minute when he stretched to full length to deny Mathe.

Suspended Independent Democrats Western Cape legislature member and former Western Cape leader Lennit Max has withdrawn his application against his suspension and upcoming disciplinary hearing by Patricia de Lille’s party. The announcement was made by De Lille on the steps of the High Court in Cape Town to a cry of joy from about 40 supporters.

Jacques Freitag, South Africa’s world champion high jumper, started his indoor tour of Europe with a new national indoor record of 2,28m at the Café Elite Cup International Jumping meeting in Bydgoszcz, Poland, on Wednesday. He had to settle for second place behind Russia’s Yaroslav Rybakov, who won the contest with a height of 2,31m.

Ajax Cape Town goalkeeper Molep Joseph had to watch his team go down 2-1 in a Premier Soccer League game at Newlands on Wednesday night. The South African Football Association had slapped an indefinite suspension on him because he tested positive for the banned substance salbutanol after failing a drug test on January 11.

In just six days, four huge flawless diamonds have been discovered at Lesotho’s Letseng diamond mine high in the Maluti mountains. The four stones together weigh in at 366 carats and mine chief executive Keith Whitelock says he expects them to fetch a minimum of $6-million (R36-million).

World leaders were on Thursday to stand side-by-side with about 1Â 000 survivors of the Auschwitz death camp for an emotional ceremony under a blanket of snow to mark the camp’s liberation 60 years ago. Ten thousand people were expected to pay tribute to the at least 1,1-million people who died at Auschwitz.

Zimbabwe’s central bank chief Gideon Gono on Wednesday said inflation, which peaked to more than 600% a year ago, would fall to between 20 and 35% this year and to a single digit in 2006. Gono was appointed in 2003 to nurse the once-model economy, now plagued by high unemployment, poverty and crippling inflation, back to health.
