AngloGold Ashanti to prospect in Laos

AngloGold Ashanti, a Ghanaian-South African gold mining company, said on Tuesday it would explore for gold in the southeast Asian country of Laos following an exploration alliance with Oxiana Limited of Laos. A statement said the agreement with Oxiana follows AngloGold Ashanti’s investment in Trans-Serbian Gold in Russia and a strategic alliance in the Philippines with Red 5 Limited.

Minister predicts hot times ahead for SA

Minister of Environmental Affairs and Tourism Marthinus van Schalkwyk told delegates to an international conference in Buenos Aires on Wednesday that temperatures could rise between 1% and 3% by 2050 in South Africa. He was speaking at the 10th conference of the Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change.

Futures activity, strong Dow lift JSE

The JSE Securities Exchange (JSE) enjoyed a firmer opening on Wednesday, helped by futures activity ahead of the afternoon’s close-out and a strong performance on Wall Street overnight. Gains were seen almost across the board and advancers outnumbered decliners on the all-share index by almost four to one.

Cape Town-bound train derails: 14 injured

About 14 passengers sustained minor injuries when a train was derailed in the Free State on Tuesday, according to police. Police spokesperson Captain Rosa Benade said the passengers were taken to a hospital in Kroonstad. Seven coaches were derailed in the accident shortly before 6pm near Westley, about 10km from Koppies. No fatalities were reported.

Security booms for Table Mountain

A number of measures have been put in place to increase security on Table Mountain — where tourists have recently been mugged, stabbed and raped, the city of Cape Town and the Table Mountain National Park said on Tuesday. ”We are putting in place a range of immediate measures to address security threats that exist, and we are asking residents and visitors to work with us to address the problem,” the city’s executive mayor Nomaindia Mfeketo said.

Michelin bean-spiller loses court battle

A Paris court on Tuesday ruled that the celebrated Michelin food guide was perfectly entitled to sack an inspector who wrote a bestselling book that questioned the credibility of its star rating system. But the court regretted that it was not qualified to rule on Michelin’s complaint that L’Inspecteur Se Met à Table (The Inspector Sits Down to Eat), an appetising exercise in bean-spilling by Pascal Rémy, had ”denigrated” the august 104-year-old guide.

War crime trials will start next week

War crimes trials will begin next week for some of Saddam Hussein’s most senior deputies, Iraq’s Prime Minister, Ayad Allawi, said on Tuesday. He did not say who would be first in the dock and his announcement, made live on television, appeared to take the Iraqi Justice Ministry and the United States embassy by surprise.
