Hawk eviction has New Yorkers in a flap

The raptors that captured the hearts of a city inspired a documentary, a book and reams of newsprint. South Africa A do well against England

South Africa A had the best of the first day of their three-day match against England at Sedgars Park on Saturday, to finish on 133 for two in their first innings, after dismissing England for 225 about half an hour after tea. This was mainly because of some outstanding bowling by Charl Langeveldt, who took five for 48 in his 15 overs.

An eagle at the par-five 18th has put tournament favourite Ernie Els back in contention for the Dunhill Championship title at the par-72 Leopard Creek golf course on Saturday. After a poor three-over-par round on Friday, Els appeared to have his work cut out.

Pirates stretch their lead

Orlando Pirates stretched their lead in the Castle Premiership after defeating Supersport United 2-0 at Johannesburg Stadium on Saturday. Pirates led 1-0 at half-time. The result takes Pirates eight points clear on the top of the log with 28 points, followed by Mamelodi Sundowns.

Everton victorious in Merseyside derby

Lee Carsley scored early in the second half to bring Everton a 1-0 victory on Saturday over Liverpool in the Merseyside Derby, the Toffies’ first victory in 10 tries in the fierce, cross-town rivalry. Everton have been the league’s most surprising team all season, and the upset over the Reds only added to it.
