Man sentenced to die for cutting up wife

A Nigerian court has sentenced a man to death by hanging for conspiring with others to kill his wife as part of a money-making magic ritual, a court official said on Tuesday. The man was said to have conspired with ritualists who had promised him money to remove vital organs such as his wife’s right eye, right breast and genitals.

Many Britons lose wedding rings

More than 25% of married couples in Briton have lost one or both of their wedding rings since tying the knot, according to a survey released on Tuesday. Researchers found that 15% of brides had lost their original wedding ring, with one in 10 grooms also admitting to losing the traditional symbol of eternal love and commitment.

SA does not take sides in Zim, says Zuma

The South African government has never taken sides in Zimbabwe between the ruling Zanu-PF and the opposition Movement for Democratic Change, Deputy President Jacob Zuma said on Tuesday. Replying to questions in the National Council of Provinces, he said South Africa has been in discussions with both sides in Zimbabwe.

Music-awards brawl injures one

A fight broke out near the stage at the Vibe awards ceremony on Monday as rapper Snoop Dogg and producer Quincy Jones were preparing to honour Dr Dre, and one person was stabbed, authorities and witnesses said. News video showed chairs being thrown, punches flying, people chasing one another and some being restrained.

Mozambique adopts new Constitution

The Mozambican Parliament on Tuesday unanimously adopted a new Constitution for the first time since the advent of multiparty politics in the Southern African nation. The new Constitution adopted on Tuesday will come into force after elections on December 1 and 2 to elect a successor to President Joaquim Chissano.

The Christmas-themed movie <i>Noel</i> most likely won’t be coming to a theatre near you — but if you miss it on cable, there’s always the self-destructing DVD. They look and play like normal DVDs, except that their playable surface is dark red. Each disc contains a chemical time-bomb that begins ticking once it’s exposed to air.

Activist Sheila Weinberg dies

Sheila Weinberg, anti-apartheid activist and member of the Gauteng legislature, has died at the age of 56, the legislature announced on Tuesday. In 1964, Weinberg became the youngest detainee in South Africa when, at the age of 17, she was held at the Johannesburg Fort under the 90-day detention law.

Telkom stake changes hands

The Public Investment Commissioners have acquired a 15,1% stake in Telkom, which it is to warehouse for the Elephant Consortium, a black economic empowerment firm, for up to six months. The consortium’s bid for Telkom shares has been criticised by opposition parties, the media and trade unions.

Polanski wraps up ‘timeless’ Oliver Twist

Oscar-winning director Roman Polanski is wrapping up his adaptation of Charles Dickens’ Oliver Twist, and the filmmaker known for grim and challenging fare says this is his most interesting movie yet. Speaking on the film set in a muddy field on the edge of Prague’s Barrandov studio on Monday, Polanski insisted the classic 19th century tale about a London orphan was still relevant to children today.
