Dane Squires was late for his own funeral. At least it seemed that way after people gathered on Thursday at a Toronto funeral home to mourn the retired welder, whom they believed had been hit by a train. Relatives were watching the casket being loaded into a hearse when his daughter was told she had an important phone call.

Tropical Storm Jeanne tore through the Dominican Republic on Friday with fierce winds that triggered mudslides, collapsed concrete walls and forced thousands to evacuate. The storm, which has killed six across the Caribbean, is expected to become a hurricane over the Bahamas and then head for Florida.

Zimbabwe is falling deeper into economic and social misery as a result of poor governance and corruption in the African nation, the International Monetary Fund (IMF) said on Friday. In its annual review of the country’s economy, the IMF notes that conditions in Zimbabwe ”have continued to deteriorate”.

Actor Macaulay Culkin was jailed on Friday on charges of possessing marijuana and a dangerous controlled substance without a prescription, police said. Culkin (24) was a passenger in a car that was pulled over for speeding on Friday in Oklahoma, Captain Jeffrey Becker of the Oklahoma City police department said in a statement.

Police discovered scores of reptiles, including deadly snakes and three crocodiles, in a suburban Sydney home, officials said on Saturday. David O’Shannessy of the Royal Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals said his staff found three baby crocodiles as well as snakes among more than 100 animals in the house.

Sudan has pledged to stick to the terms of an oft-violated ceasefire agreement for its civil-war wracked Darfur region and said it will allow humanitarian agencies unfettered access to the area where tens of thousands have died. A suicide car bomb ripped through the Iraqi national guard headquarters in Kirkuk on Saturday, killing 10 people in the second major attack on the northern city this month. Also, nine people were wounded when a mortar shell struck a crowd of students and parents awaiting exam results in front of a school in the Iraqi city of Baquba.

Police in Moscow found and defused two car bombs overnight in the Russian capital, Russian media reported on Saturday. Police discovered the two cars, filled with explosives and mines, on two separate residential streets in the city centre late on Friday, Interfax reported, citing an unnamed police official.

Dutch airline KLM is concerned about the security situation at Johannesburg International airport following Thursday’s attempted robbery near one of its aircraft. On Thursday night, a gang of armed men tried to intercept a cargo as it was being loaded on board with a police escort.
