Cities find ways to please street skaters

But even Rob Dyrdek sometimes has trouble finding legal places to do what he refers to as his ”job.” ”I get paid a ridiculous amount of money to do what I do, and I still have to run from cops and jump fences,” says Dyrdek, an Ohio native who now lives in San Diego, California.

NUM dismisses Lonmin deal as fake empowerment

The National Union of Mineworkers (NUM) on Tuesday dismissed platinum producer Lonmin’s recent black economic empowerment deal as "fake". "This is a fake empowerment because the so-called stake is a debt that will be only liquidated in seven years. Our members are expected to work now and liquidate the debt for the benefit of future generations," said NUM Secretary General Gwede Mantashe.

Resources, banks lead JSE lower

The JSE Securities Exchange (JSE) was in the red just before noon on Tuesday, having been knocked down by heavyweight resources and banking counters. Petrochemicals group Sasol, which was hit by the double whammy of disappointing results and a strike at its coal operations, was the most active stock.

Prisoners still facing the noose

There are still at least seven prisoners facing the death penalty in the Eastern Cape, although the death penalty was finally written out of the law six years ago. Countrywide, there are thought to be dozens of prisoners who were sentenced to death before the abolition of the death penalty in 1995, who are still waiting for their sentences to be commuted.

Israeli attack on Hamas activists in Gaza kills 14

An Israeli attack on Hamas activists training near Gaza City killed at least 14 people early on Tuesday. The raid came a week after Hamas murdered 16 Israelis in twin suicide bombings on buses in Be’er Sheva. Israel’s leaders vowed bloody revenge on the Islamist group. The dead in Tuesday’s attack were all believed to be Hamas supporters.

Sasol expects drop in oil price

Oil and chemicals group Sasol expects near-dated Brent crude oil to soften from its current level of about $40 a barrel, and during the course of the coming year the group expects Brent to fall to the low $30s a barrel, Sasol chief executive Pieter Cox said on Tuesday. London’s Brent crude closed on Monday at $40,62 a barrel.

Sasol hit by Solidarity strike

More than 1 000 Solidarity members who work for Sasol’s coal-mining operations embarked on a protected strike in Secunda on Tuesday, Solidarity said in a statement. Solidarity members are "tired" of Sasol’s management style, especially the poor salary increases the group gives and unsafe working conditions.

Tributes pour in for Beyers Naude

”An African icon”, a ”true son of Africa” and a man who ”helped reaffirm the dignity of all South Africans” were among the tributes pouring in for anti-apartheid cleric Beyers Naude who died on Tuesday morning. Naude died at 89 with his wife Ilse and his four children at his bedside at his retirement home in Johannesburg.
