Two new moons of Saturn discovered

The Cassini-Huygens space probe discovered two new moons around Saturn, which could be the smallest spotted to date around the ringed planet, Nasa officials said on Tuesday. The moons — measuring 3km and 4km in diameter — are located 194 000km and 211 000km respectively from Saturn.

Nurse suspended after hospital Aids scare

A nurse at Sterkfontein mental hospital has been suspended for allegedly using the same needle on several patients, an action that could spread the HI virus. The Gauteng health department said on Tuesday the senior nurse was conducting routine glucose needle-prick tests on patients at the hospital in Krugersdorp last Wednesday.

Peace delegation arrives at Najaf shrine

Delegates from Iraq’s National Conference arrived at the Imam Ali Shrine on Tuesday, amid heavy fighting, to urge militia leader Moqtada al-Sadr to vacate the city’s mausoleum, an AFP correspondent said. Continuous, heavy gunfire raged throughout the day in Najaf, peppered with mortar blasts.

Snakes invade railroad building

More than 100 snakes invaded a Ukrainian railroad building, forcing workers inside to evacuate the premises and so halting rail traffic for several hours, according to a Tuesday Fakty newspaper report. The incident took place in Ukraine’s south-eastern steppe zone along a rail line connecting the cities Donetsk and Mariupol.

Rescuers mop up after British flash flood

Rescue workers combed a coastal village in north Cornwall on Tuesday for missing persons after a flash flood sent a wall of water tearing through the picturesque tourist spot the day before. More than 50 automobiles were swept into the sea at the height of Monday’s torrential rainstorm and a half-dozen buildings collapsed.

Iscor agrees to lay-off moratorium

The wage dispute between trade union Solidarity and steel producer Iscor was resolved on Tuesday when the two parties signed a wage agreement. The agreement — which comes after a month-long wage dispute — includes, among other things, a three-year moratorium on forced retrenchments.

South Africans 45% under-insured on average

Short-term insurance policy holders in South Africa are under-insured by about 45% on average, according to market research conducted by Santam, South Africa’s largest short-term insurance company. This means policy-holders will only receive partial compensation after submitting an insurance claim.
