Mighty Mauresmo on the move

Fourth seed Amelie Mauresmo of France worked her way back from a slow start to reach the Wimbledon quarterfinals in London on Tuesday, defeating Italian veteran Silvia Farina Elia 7-5, 6-3. Mauresmo is rated the main threat to top seed and defending champion Serena Williams.

Nevirapine resistance fears

Preliminary studies into the efficacy of the anti-Aids drug nevirapine have raised concerns about patients developing resistance to the drug, the South African health ministry said on Monday. A national consultative meeting would be convened as soon as possible after next month’s international Aids conference in Bangkok to further discuss the matter of resistance, the ministry said.

Traumatised Lord of the Dance cast to fly home

The cast of Lord of the Dance, traumatised by the weekend murder of a colleague in Johannesburg, will all be flying home to their families, Michael Flatley said on Monday. ”Nothing is more important to me than the wellbeing of the dancers,” said Flatley, the founder of the dance show, while addressing a press conference at Sandton on Monday.

A secret French-South African anti-poaching operation in the Southern Ocean has led to the arrest of an fishing vessel — but only after shots were fired at the suspected poacher when it refused to stop. The arrest took place about 5 000km south-east of Cape Town, within the economic exclusion zone around the French Antarctic island of Kerguelen.
