The names of the Bafana Bafana men or boys chosen to represent the country in Tunisia next year were finally announced by national coach Ephraim ”Shakes” Mashaba on Thursday. The team may raise a few eyebrows and tempers among the soccer-loving supporters, including those armchair critics, but caution should be taken.

Erstwhile Springbok coach Nick Mallett is out of the running to become the new Bok coach, South African Rugby Football Union president Brian van Rooyen revealed on Wednesday when he announced the four-man Springbok coaching shortlist. He also denied that any discussions with Mallett had taken place.

National cricket coach Eric Simons brushed aside criticism on Wednesday that the South African bowling attack will struggle to dismiss the West Indies twice in a Test match. South Africa meets the Windies in the first of four Tests at the Wanderers on Friday in a series many believe will be a battle between the respective batting line-ups.

With the confirmation of the outbreak of equine flu in the Western Cape comes the news that racing could be seriously affected in that region for an indefinite period. Tony Barnes, CEO of the Jockey Club of Southern Africa, confirmed that racing would not take place in Cape Town until further notice.

Tsholola Tshinyana scored in the 27th minute to push Ajax Cape Town back to the top of the PSL log, one point above Santos, for a narrow 1-0 win against Moroka Swallows at Newlands on Wednesday night. In the second half Ajax were lucky to survive a mighty onslaught by the the rampant visitors.

Pele has turned down an invitation from Ronaldo and Zinedine Zidane to appear in a United Nations fund-raising match in Basel, Switzerland, next Monday. Portuguese-based striker Benni McCarthy dropped a major bombshell when he announced his retirement from the national soccer team. This was announced prior to Bafana coach Shakes Mashaba naming his 22-man Bafana Bafana squad on Thursday to play at the African Nations Cup finals in Tunisia next month.
