Million-job plan fatally flawed

Mbeki has pledged that his government will produce a million jobs in the foreseeable future. Manuel’s recent budget is intended to bring that plan into focus. This is not simply an election ploy, as cynics would suggest, but an alignment with a new international understanding that economic growth is not a sufficient policy objective.

Students maul Rangers

Wits University leapfrogged from the fifth to the fourth spot of the Castle Premiership table after thumping Manning Rangers 4-0 at the Bidvest Stadium on Sunday. The Students, who are yet to taste defeat after five wins and five draws, have 20 points.

Chelsea take charge

Chelsea stormed to the summit of the English Premiership on Sunday when a controversial penalty gave them a 1-0 victory over Manchester United at Stamford Bridge. Frank Lampard’s 30th-minute spot-kick was enough to secure a crucial victory for Chelsea. Previous leaders Arsenal were held to a 0-0 draw by Fulham.

Sergio Garcia wins at Sun City

Sergio Garcia won his second Nedbank Golf Challenge at Sun City on Sunday supporting the fight against child abuse in South Africa.

”Nick Price asked me if I would support the campaign against the abuse of chlidren,” said the charismatic Spaniard, indicating the two silver logos pinned to his golf shirt collar. ”And I was only too happy to do it.”

Zimbabwe’s worsening fuel crisis has occasioned some unusual social customs. Of these, the daily activities of Golden Chamisa (20) certainly rank among the more desperate. As fair exchange for his services the truckers simply allow Chamisa to siphon-off the last dregs of fuel from the empty tankers they are returning to South Africa.

Kenyans back in the IMF’s good books

Less than a year after sweeping his National Rainbow Coalition (NRC) to power, Kenya’s President Mwai Kibaki has won a good housekeeping seal of approval from the stony-faced International Monetary Fund (IMF). The Breton Woods institution has found that Kibaki made good on his promise to tackle corruption head on.
