The Freedom Front Plus and the Herstigte Nasionale Party will be fighting each other for the minds of the conservative electorate whom they both claim are out in the political wilderness.

Former Western Cape premier Peter Marais had been a temperamental and often melodramatic witness, and his evidence was contrived and self serving, the Cape High Court heard on Monday. Judge Anton Veldhuizen was hearing closing arguments in the case in which former MEC Freda Adams is suing Marais for R2,3-million for defamation and sexual harassment.

Malawi’s President Bakili Muluzi will on Tuesday launch the country’s first-ever policy on HIV/Aids amid claims by health officials that the alarming infection rates in the Southern African nation have stabilised over the years. Malawi, where HIV/Aids and sexual topics are taboo, has had no Aids policy for the past 21 years.

The Azanian People’s Organisation (Azapo) has suspended cooperation talks with the Pan Africanist Congress because it is unhappy with the lack of progress being made between the two parties, the party’s secretary general, Dan Habedi, said on Monday. ”After the first agreement … the PAC never came to the party,” he said.

Hundreds of Haitians looted TV sets, mattresses and sacks of flour from shipping containers on Sunday in the port town of St Marc, one of several communities seized by rebels in a bloody uprising against President Jean-Bertrand Aristide. At least 18 people have been killed since opponents of Aristide began their assault on Thursday.

South Africa’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma, has pledged to stand by the troubled Caribbean country of Haiti, which has since Thursday been under siege by armed opponents to its president, arguing that the country needs to be assisted in its quest to establish a functioning democratic system.

The Zimbabwe National Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (NSPCA) has reacted strongly to a feature published by the <i>Mail & Guardian Online</i> about the fate of former pets and farm animals in Zimbabwe. However, the Wet Nose Animal Rescue Centre in South Africa has disputed the NSPCA’s response.
