The British government will hold an inquiry into the intelligence used in deciding to go to war with Iraq, Prime Minister Tony Blair said on Tuesday. The announcement comes a day after United States President George Bush announced he would name an independent, bipartisan inquiry into faulty intelligence in Iraq.

Indonesia said on Tuesday that tests have shown it is suffering from the same strain of bird flu that has killed 12 people in Thailand and Vietnam. Indonesia was among the last countries in the region to order a cull to stop the spread of the disease, which has hit 10 countries.

Israel’s Prime Minister Ariel Sharon plans to hand over Arab Israeli towns to the Palestinians in exchange for settlement land in the West Bank in a future deal, his spokesperson Ranaan Gissin said on Tuesday. ”These exchanges can only take place if we have a Palestinian partner and terrorism is stifled,” Gissin said.

A new education initiative has been started in Swaziland to assist children who have lost parents to the Aids pandemic. The government says it will start paying the tuition fees of all Aids orphans, many of whom would not be able to attend school otherwise.

The Road Accident Fund Amendment Bill of 2003 and its successor were deliberated in the parliamentary committee on transport from November 19 to October 3. Minister of Transport Dullah Omar said deliberations in the committee were useful and that it should proceed with aspects of the Bill that are not contentious.

The JSE Securities Exchange South Africa (JSE) defied conventional wisdom on Tuesday by coming off its opening lows despite continued strength in the rand, which would normally weigh heavily on dual-listed and resources stocks. At midday the rand was quoted at R6,93 per dollar from R7,05 when the JSE closed on Monday.

Tropical storm Elita hit the Indian Ocean island state of Madagascar early on Tuesday — returning to the country for the second time in a week — but there were no initial reports of casualties, weather officials said.
