BBC chief resigns after damning report

Greg Dyke, the head of the BBC, resigned on Thursday after a judicial inquiry harshly criticised the network’s journalistic standards. On Wednesday, Judge Lord Hutton criticised the BBC for an ”unfounded” report it broadcast accusing the government of ”sexing up” a dossier about Iraq’s weapons of mass destruction with information it knew was wrong.

Cholera toll rises in Mozambique

The cholera death toll in Mozambique’s capital, Maputo, since Christmas has risen to 20, health authorities said on Thursday. Deputy national health director Avertino Barreto said about 250 people were being treated daily for the waterborne disease at the Mavalane hospital in the east coast port city.

IFP, ANC to discuss tension

President Thabo Mbeki said on Thursday that the Inkatha Freedom Party and the African National Congress will meet on Monday to discuss the political tension between the two parties. Earlier on Thursday, Mbeki’s convoy was brought to a halt by about 150 IFP supporters carrying traditional weapons.

SA minister may be destined for glory

South Africa’s Minister of Trade and Industry, Alec Erwin, has been tipped by an influential American journal as the favourite candidate for the director general’s post at the World Trade Organisation, which becomes vacant in September 2005. Erwin’s ministry has poured cold water on the speculation.

SA, Angolan health ministers sign agreement

The health ministers of South Africa and Angola signed an agreement on Thursday to cooperate in combating diseases such as HIV/Aids, tuberculosis and malaria. The pact paves the way for twinning of hospitals in the two countries, technical support to Angola and the exchange of health professionals and information.

DRD, Harmony continue Iscor pricing war

South African miner Durban Roodepoort Deep (DRD) is set to continue, together with Harmony Gold Mining, its action against steel group Iscor to secure "fair" steel prices. Earlier this month, the Competition Commission threw out an appeal from DRD and Harmony to investigate Iscor for monopolistic practices in respect of steel pricing.

Israel releases prisoners after blast

Israel released hundreds of Palestinian prisoners as part of a deal with Hezbollah on Thursday just hours after a suicide bomber killed 10 other people when he blew himself up aboard a bus close to Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon’s official residence.

Millions heed call to register

More women than men registered to vote during the voter registration drive of January 24 and 25, and 18- to 25-year-olds proved those accusing them of apathy at least partly wrong. The Independent Electoral Commission on Thursday announced the results of the country’s second voter registration weekend.

IFP supporters block Mbeki’s entry to imbizo

President Thabo Mbeki’s arrival at a community imbizo in Tugela Ferry near Pietermaritzburg was delayed by Inkatha Freedom Party (IFP) supporters marching in front of the presidential convoy on Thursday. The marchers chanted that they were IFP warriors and that the African National Congress, which Mbeki heads, was not welcome.
