Blazing Cairo tower block collapses, kills 14

At least 14 people were killed, most of them policemen and firefighters, when a blazing 12-storey tower block collapsed on emergency services in a Cairo suburb, police said on Tuesday. Rescue workers pulled out the bodies of four policemen, eight firefighters and two civilians from the building which collapsed during a fire.

JSE down, but telecoms feature

The JSE Securities Exchange South Africa (JSE) retained its softer tone at midday on Tuesday, with a firmer currency taking its toll on heavyweight rand hedge stocks. The main features in the morning session were telecommunications stocks, which continued the strength seen during Monday’s session.

Airlines square up for price war

An air ticket price war became evident on Tuesday when South African Airways announced it had reduced its prices, matching those of Kulula.com. The no-frills carrier, Kulula.com, which had been running its special since January 16 said it was not concerned by the SAA decision to reduce its fares.

DA reacts to candidates’ list leak

The official opposition Democratic Alliance has reacted to what it has called newspaper speculation about the selection of candidates for the upcoming parliamentary and provincial legislature elections. The candidate list was meant to be kept under wraps until changes were made by party leader Tony Leon.

The cruellest of culls

And so the slaughter of elephants begins. Six adult members of a herd were gunned down in Mpumalanga last weekend and their eight babies were kidnapped for sale to exhibition parks. This recent cull and capture operation has caused alarm among animal welfare groups.
