Israel releases prisoners after blast

Israel released hundreds of Palestinian prisoners as part of a deal with Hezbollah on Thursday just hours after a suicide bomber killed 10 other people when he blew himself up aboard a bus close to Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon’s official residence.

Millions heed call to register

More women than men registered to vote during the voter registration drive of January 24 and 25, and 18- to 25-year-olds proved those accusing them of apathy at least partly wrong. The Independent Electoral Commission on Thursday announced the results of the country’s second voter registration weekend.

IFP supporters block Mbeki’s entry to imbizo

President Thabo Mbeki’s arrival at a community imbizo in Tugela Ferry near Pietermaritzburg was delayed by Inkatha Freedom Party (IFP) supporters marching in front of the presidential convoy on Thursday. The marchers chanted that they were IFP warriors and that the African National Congress, which Mbeki heads, was not welcome.

ANC condemns IFP for blocking Mbeki

South Africa’s ruling African National Congress has moved to swiftly condemn the actions of what it said were opposition Inkatha Freedom Party supporters who tried to block South African President Thabo Mbeki’s entrance to an imbizo event in the troubled Tugela Ferry in KwaZulu-Natal earlier on Thursday.

JSE marches to rand’s beat

The JSE Securities Exchange South Africa (JSE) was marginally weaker in noon trade on Thursday after a roller-coaster morning on which the bourse took its cue primarily from a volatile rand. Weaker world markets were also weighing, dealers said. The rand was quoted at R6,96 to the dollar after earlier going as weak as R7,07.
