Microsoft yesterday said it had reached a -million settlement of class action antitrust lawsuits in six additional American states. The agreements mean that the software firm has now settled complaints with 10 states for a total of ,5-billion, leaving just five more actions pending.

The Freedom of Expression Institute and the South African History Archive said on Tuesday they were dismayed at the country’s intelligence agencies for not cooperating with the Hefer commission. They said the intelligence services had made it clear they were going to make it as difficult as possible for the commission to access their records.

Australia’s worst serial killers were sentenced on Wednesday to life in prison for their role in what became known as the bodies-in-the-barrels case. ”The evidence has drawn me to the conclusion that both of you are incapable of true rehabilitation,” Judge Brian Martin told John Bunting (37) and Robert Wagner (31).

Hundreds of human skeletons have been unearthed at a construction site at the Victoria & Alfred Waterfront, in Cape Town — the site of BP’s new head office — the Cape Times reported on Wednesday. Construction in the area has been halted while archaeologists from the University of Cape Town excavate the human bones.

Appearances can be deceiving. It’s an old adage but it illustrates a point often overlooked in the travel trade — luxury isn’t worth a dime if it isn’t backed up by great service and hospitality. So when you come across a destination that offers value for money, friendliness, excellent service and hearty meals, but isn’t competing for a spot in a decor magazine, it can be refreshing. At least that’s the case at the Magoebaskloof hotel.

Responsibility for the internal security of Iraq should be handed over to Iraqis as soon as possible, a key member of the Iraqi governing council urged on Tuesday. Dr Mahmoud Osman, one of the six most prominent members of the US appointed body, said: ”The coalition should leave these things to Iraqis, we could do a much better job.
