What are Californians smoking these days?

Where there’s smoke, there’s fire, said California’s new governor, Arnold Schwarzenegger, in the final days of his campaign in response to allegations of his harassing women. At the time, it seemed as though he was speaking metaphorically but, in retrospect, maybe he was pondering on the issue of what Californians smoke and where and what should be done about it.

Couldn’t happen to better blokes

It wasn’t pretty. It wasn’t fun. But England leave Perth for Melbourne this morning with a win over South Africa’s battering Boks proudly notched on their World Cup belts. The watching Prince Harry may be third in line for his mum’s throne. After this ugly triumph, England are at least one step up the ladder from there when it comes to the pecking order for the global crown in Sydney on November 22.

    Wilkinson steers England to victory

    England star Jonny Wilkinson scored 20 points as the World Cup co-favourites overcame a ferocious performance from South Africa to win 25-6 at Subiaco Oval here on Saturday. Fly-half Wilkinson put on a flawless display with the boot to put England in pole position in Pool C — effectively condemning South Africa to a daunting quarter-final against New Zealand.

    Protector did not look at Zuma-Shaik link

    Public Protector Lawrence Mushwana has cleared Deputy President Jacob Zuma of allegations he breached the executive ethics code by not properly declaring his interests and liabilities in the register of financial interests. However, Mushwana did not investigate Zuma’s relationship with his financial adviser, Durban businessman Schabir Shaik.
