DA wants expats to vote

Democratic Alliance leader Tony Leon has told an audience in London that he would oppose the Electoral Laws Amendment Bill in its current form as it disenfranchised South Africans abroad. He added that in 1994 South Africa made a special effort to enable overseas citizens to vote.

Capital gains tax deadline extended

Minister of Finance Trevor Manuel has announced the extension, by a year, of the deadline for the evaluation of second properties in terms of the capital gains tax legislation to September 30 2004. He said that there was a shortage of evaluators in South Africa and the government had acceded to requests for an extension.

Remorseful Bali bomber may escape death

A remorseful Islamic teacher who planted the deadliest bomb in the Bali nightclub attacks is expected to escape the death penalty in Indonesia. Prosecutors have demanded a 20-year prison term for Ali Imron, who parked the van containing the main bomb used in last October’s terrorist attacks.

Argentina gets tough on soccer violence

Officials have announced new measures to bolster security at Argentina’s soccer stadiums, nearly a week after play in the country’s professional leagues was suspended because of fan violence. The government said it was creating a special prosecutor’s unit to investigate sports-related crimes.
