Mbeki will not suspend Zuma

President Thabo Mbeki has emphasised in Parliament that he will not suspend Deputy President Jacob Zuma as he is not a court and a person is innocent until proven guilty. ”We will not take any disciplinary action simply on the basis of allegations,” he said.

Zimbabwe daily to reopen, orders court

The High Court in Zimbabwe on Thursday ordered the reopening of the country’s only independent daily newspaper, the <i>Daily News</i>, closed by the government last week for operating illegally.

Senior health officials in financial scandal

A forensic audit of the Mpumalanga health department has recommended criminal proceedings be instituted against two Mpumalanga health department officials implicated in financial mismanagement. The SABC has reported it is in possession of the audit report, which Premier Ndaweni Mahlangu has refused to make public.

What is Cape Town hiding?

Do Cape Town city councillors have something to hide? Only five out of 200 councillors voted yes to a question to have the city’s register of interests viewed. Assistant city manager Dr Stewart Fisher said the city still needs to determine which aspects of the register be made public and which remain private.

Blix: ‘Iraq war not justified’

Former United Nations arms inspector Hans Blix has said that the war on Iraq was not justified and that Washington and London ”over-interpreted” intelligence data, while a new message attributed to ousted president Saddam Hussein urged Iraqis to fight United States occupying forces.

Land restoration Bill passed

South Africa’s National Assembly has passed into law the Land Rights Amendment Bill aimed at speeding up the restitution process in the country. The Bill allows Minister of Agriculture and Land Affairs Thoko Didiza to purchase, acquire in any other manner or expropriate land for purposes of restoration.
