President Thabo Mbeki has emphasised in Parliament that he will not suspend Deputy President Jacob Zuma as he is not a court and a person is innocent until proven guilty. ”We will not take any disciplinary action simply on the basis of allegations,” he said.

The High Court in Zimbabwe on Thursday ordered the reopening of the country’s only independent daily newspaper, the <i>Daily News</i>, closed by the government last week for operating illegally.

The Congress of South African Trade Unions (Cosatu) has called on the government to review the constitutional mandate of the South African Reserve Bank to make employment an explicit objective of its monetary policy. It said the strong rand has caused thousands of workers to lose their jobs.

A judicial commission of inquiry is to probe claims that National Director of Public Prosecutions Bulelani Ngcuka was an apartheid-era spy, the government revealed on Thursday. In terms of a Cabinet decision on Wednesday, a retired judge would head the investigation.

A forensic audit of the Mpumalanga health department has recommended criminal proceedings be instituted against two Mpumalanga health department officials implicated in financial mismanagement. The SABC has reported it is in possession of the audit report, which Premier Ndaweni Mahlangu has refused to make public.

The death toll in a ferry tragedy at the Zambia-Namibia-Botswana border rose to 18 on Thursday, after more bodies from the ill-fated pontoon were pulled out of the Zambezi river by rescue teams. The ferry sank on Wednesday after an overweight South African truck caused it to tilt over.

Do Cape Town city councillors have something to hide? Only five out of 200 councillors voted yes to a question to have the city’s register of interests viewed. South Africa’s National Assembly has passed into law the Land Rights Amendment Bill aimed at speeding up the restitution process in the country. The Bill allows Minister of Agriculture and Land Affairs Thoko Didiza to purchase, acquire in any other manner or expropriate land for purposes of restoration.
