Zimbabwean police have arrested about 100 activists and three journalists during a demonstration against the state’s shutting down of the country’s only independent daily newspaper. Their march was to protest the closure of the Daily News and ”the deteriorating political and economic situation”.

Chevrolet has returned to SA. But don’t start clearing space in the garage for a fleet of Corvettes and similar exotics yet. The cars sold as Chevrolets in this country will be sourced and imported from South Korea and Australia, and will in fact be Holden and Daewoo products. Is this a wise move? We think not.

Democratic Alliance leader Tony Leon has told an audience in London that he would oppose the Electoral Laws Amendment Bill in its current form as it disenfranchised South Africans abroad. He added that in 1994 South Africa made a special effort to enable overseas citizens to vote.

Minister of Finance Trevor Manuel has announced the extension, by a year, of the deadline for the evaluation of second properties in terms of the capital gains tax legislation to September 30 2004. He said that there was a shortage of evaluators in South Africa and the government had acceded to requests for an extension.

It was like a scene from the apartheid era’s liquor and pass raids. Government officials swooped down on Hillbrow in Johannesburg, sending many a grown man running into the night, as street vendors hastily packed up their wares and fled the scene. Most of those arrested were illegal immigrants.

A remorseful Islamic teacher who planted the deadliest bomb in the Bali nightclub attacks is expected to escape the death penalty in Indonesia. Prosecutors have demanded a 20-year prison term for Ali Imron, who parked the van containing the main bomb used in last October’s terrorist attacks.
