HIV/Aids barometer – March 2003

Pain in the ass: Infection with human papillomavirus (HPV) — associated with vaginal and anal cancer, and pre-cancerous lesions — has been found in a significant number of HIV-positive men who have never had anal intercourse, say researchers from the Georges Pompidou Hospital outpatient clinic in Paris.

World Cup not played in quarantine

The cricket World Cup has not been played behind some ethical quarantine, nor will future ones be. The crookery hasn’t gone and this World Cup no more celebrates true sporting glory than previous tournaments prompted the need for the opening of 70 secret offshore bank accounts by one of the most burnished of cricketing icons.

Towards a more perilous world

The war in Iraq is an unjust war for many reasons. It has no international sanction. The United Nations is solely concerned with Iraq’s alleged weapons of mass destruction; President George W Bush has no international authority to pursue regime change. But the war is also about revenge.

Budd in bloom

The woman sipping tea in a sunlit garden deep in Afrikaner country does and does not resemble the Zola Budd Britain remembers. The hair is rather longer, the legs tanned and muscular for so small a frame, the feet bare, the face of a pixie, with lines around the eyes indicating this is no longer a teenager.

Dreadlock holiday

Here in the Dorsbult the manne are very pleased about the World Cup cricket final. We’re happy because by Monday life will have returned to normal and we can watch the important sports — like darts, mud-wrestling and rugby — again on the box.
However, we don’t seem to be the only ones suffering from cricket-fatigue.

The roaring twenties

It’s never a good idea to get carried away about a home win in the Super 12. The tournament is into its eighth season and it became clear very early that away wins were what counted, home wins being taken as a given for any side that had pretensions to finishing in the top half of the table.
