On the savannah plains of Africa, there is perhaps no greater body of myths than those about the city, and none are more fanciful than those about Johannesburg, variously known out there as Jozi, Jubheki and Egoli. It is the ill fortune of Pretoria always to tag along in the shadow cast by mammoth Johannesburg.

Cosatu has always supported the principle of BEE. Our national democratic revolution cannot be completed without reversing the massive racial imbalance in the distribution of wealth we inherited from our racist past. Interestingly, the RDP does not mention the term "black economic empowerment".

Just over a decade later, we celebrate a body of law developed by the Constitutional Court. Ranging from a rich set of judgements promoting equality to the protection of a deepened sense of democracy based on public participation, the court has propelled the country along the road leading to the promised constitutional democracy.

The return to Bujumbura this week of more than 20 senior Burundian rebels is being hailed as a highly positive development in ending that country’s conflict. ”The [Forces of the National Liberation] FNL members going back to Bujumbura is positive but complex,” says conflict analyst Jan van Eck, who a specialist on Burundi.

South Africa’s cricketers received well wishes of the highest order on Monday when President Thabo Mbeki visited them in Pretoria. ”We’ll all be rooting for you,” Mbeki told them ahead of their departure for the West Indies on Wednesday. Team captain Graeme Smith, for his part, said the Proteas were confident of doing well in the International Cricket Council World Cup next month.

The African National Congress Youth League (ANCYL) has not consulted ANC deputy president Jacob Zuma about its support for him as candidate for the party’s presidency. Speaking at a media conference in Johannesburg on Monday, where it reiterated its support for Zuma, the ANCYL said it did not need Zuma’s permission to start lobbying for him.

The National Association of People living With HIV and Aids (Napwa) is to hold prayer meetings in all provinces on Wednesday morning in support of Health Minister Manto Tshabalala-Msimang. The main meeting will be in Germiston, Napwa national director Nkululeko Nxesi said on Monday.
