Telkom acquires Africa Online

Telkom South Africa, Africa’s largest integrated communications company, will expand its footprint into nine African states following its acquisition of Africa Online. "This acquisition is aligned to Telkom’s goal of expanding outside South Africa, specifically sub-Saharan Africa, where there is growth potential … and value creation for our shareholders," said Telkom CEO Papi Molotsane.

Manuel unveils new pension proposals

The new social-security pension will bring relief to the middle-income earners and should not be a tax burden on the better-off. ”If you are currently contributing to a retirement fund at [a rate of] 15% the likelihood is that this will mean no extra contributions,” said Treasury official Jonathan Dixon.

World Cup woes for Aussies as Lee pulls out

Hurricanes edge Brumbies with last-gasp try

Thomas Waldrom scored a try after the final hooter to give the Wellington Hurricanes an 11-10 win over the ACT Brumbies in another low-scoring Super 14 rugby match on Friday. Number eight Waldrom broke from a ruck in the last act of a drab match, to burst through the Brumbies’ previously resilient defence and score an unconverted stoppage-time try.

Budget 2007: The good, the bad and the ugly

What is good about the 2007 budget? Firstly, that Minister of Finance Trevor Manuel opted for a surplus where he collects more than he spends — 0,6% of GDP, or about R11-billion. The final number will in all likelihood be a bit higher, probably 1% of GDP, or about R19-billion. But why not spend all the money you collect?

Pakistan test fires long-range ballistic missile

Pakistan successfully test-fired a nuclear-capable, surface-to-surface ballistic missile with a range of 2 000km on Friday, the military said. The test was witnessed by the chairperson of the joint chiefs of staff committee, General Ehsan ul Haq, who described it as an important milestone in Pakistan’s quest to sustain strategic balance in South Asia.

The government’s ”narrow focus” on land was counter-productive, says a report delivered to President Thabo Mbeki. This was often the cause of failure and lack of sustainability in land reform, argues the document. The report, handed over by a group of farmers on Tuesday, resulted from an initiative by a group of prominent Afrikaner businessmen and academics.
