Three patients at a hospital in Florence were given transplants using organs from a donor who was HIV-positive because of a mistake made on a laboratory form, Italian health officials said on Tuesday. ”Human error” had led to the liver and both kidneys of a 41-year-old woman being cleared for transplantation.

Woolworths has withdrawn all its house brand dry dog and cat food from its shelves over concerns that it may be contaminated, the South African Broadcasting Corporation said on Tuesday. The company said it was alerted by a supplier that there might be traces of a contaminant, ethylene-glycol, in its range of pet food.

Zimbabwe’s veteran leader Robert Mugabe reiterated on Tuesday there was no vacancy for the country’s presidency, warning ambitious government colleagues to stop jostling to succeed him. In a defiant interview marking his 83rd birthday, Mugabe also lashed out at ”corrupt” ministers in his Cabinet.

Iran will on Wednesday be declared in violation of a United Nations resolution calling for a halt to its enrichment of uranium. ”Anyone interested in irrational moves would definitely receive an appropriate response,” said Ari Larijani, Iran’s chief nuclear negotiator.

The Freedom of Expression Institute (FXI) has laid a complaint with the Independent Communications Authority of South Africa about the South African Broadcasting Corporation (SABC), related to its alleged blacklisting of commentators. The FXI is concerned about the SABC’s lack of response to the findings by a commission of inquiry into the matter.

South African steel manufacturer Mittal Steel on Wednesday reported a decline in diluted headline earnings per share to 1 041 cents for the year ended in December 2006 from 1 137 cents a year earlier. Basic HEPS were 1 042 cents from 1 139 cents before.

The Kenyan government has repatriated about 1 000 Ethiopians who fled their land after recent violent tribal clashes, according to reports. The Ethiopians, members of the Gabra and Borana tribes who have been fighting recently over cattle and water resources, were apparently sent back after the Ethiopian government assured the people their land would be secured.

Given his military background, it is likely Ananias Mathe could have squeezed through the tiny window of a C-Max prison cell on his own to escape from jail last year, a ministerial task team has found. It is possible he did so without the assistance of prison warders, task team member Paul Govindsamy said on Tuesday. However, MPs disagreed.

Police have lashed out at a message campaign warning white people that black people will attack them when former president Nelson Mandela dies, saying they are without substance. A spokesperson for the police national commissioner, Director Sally de Beer, said the messages also incited white people to prepare to congregate at pre-identified ”safe areas” and to defend themselves.
