Makoni maps out plan to heal Zimbabwe

Zimbabwe’s former finance minister, Simba Makoni, pledged on Wednesday to heal the Southern African country’s wounds as he unveiled his strategy to end President Robert Mugabe’s 28-year rule in polls next month. He expressed confidence of toppling Mugabe after accusing him of engendering fear and despair.

Liberty working with cops to end fraud scam

Five independent brokers have been identified as allegedly using personal client information to submit unauthorised policy applications to Liberty Life, the financial-services group said on Wednesday. Spokesperson Mandy Denton said Liberty Life had sent one forensic investigator to KwaZulu-Natal to assist police with investigations.

ANC Youth League meets traders on liquor ban

The African National Congress Youth League (ANCYL) met the South African Liquor Traders’ Association (Salta) in Johannesburg on Wednesday to discuss a proposed liquor ban on Sundays. The league proposed to ban Sunday liquor sales after its annual national executive committee’s lekgotla (meeting) two weeks ago.

Consumers still seen driving SA growth

South Africa’s consumers will continue to fuel economic growth as their incomes increase, a government minister said on Wednesday. Trade and Industry Minister Mandisi Mpahlwa told Parliament on Wednesday the economy had gone through structural changes and consumer spending will be resilient.

Nationwide strike over pensions cripples Greece

A 24-hour nationwide strike against the Greek government’s economic and pension reforms crippled transport on Wednesday and shut down public services. Thousands of people also gathered in Athens to protest against reforms the ruling conservatives say will make Greece’s economy more competitive and rescue the ailing pension system.
