Mbeki: The Native Intelligence Diaries

Saturday morning. Launch of biography last night downstairs in the Albert Luthuli Memorial Log-Bar and still as giddy as a schoolgirl. Slept in my tux, just didn’t want it to end. Mistake, though: forgot I had smuggled out crème brûlée in breast pocket for celebratory nosh-up in bed after lights out and presidential duvet now covered with ants.

Car on fire crashes into UK airport

A blazing Cherokee Jeep smashed into the main terminal building at Scotland’s Glasgow airport on Saturday, police said, a day after two car bombings were foiled in central London. Police said two people were arrested in Saturday’s incident. The airport was closed afterwards. There were no reports of any injuries.

Mbeki gives ANC meet a thumbs-up

There had been no ”bitter conflict” at the African National Congress’s (ANC) policy conference this week, party president Thabo Mbeki said in his closing address on Saturday. He told the 1 500 delegates at Gallagher Estate in Midrand that the meeting had been highly successful.

US couple hit big time with $105m jackpot

Don Harvey’s long-haul truck had almost three million kilometres on it when its engine died this week. Now he and his wife are millionaires who bought the winning ticket for a ,8-million lottery jackpot. Harvey and his wife, Joyce, said they will pay off bills, help family members and think about buying a new home with their winnings.

New cycle race coming to Western Cape

The Western Cape’s newest — and potentially second largest — cycle race, Die Burger Fietstoer, was unveiled on Friday and will take place on Sunday December 2. This road race will take place in and around Stellenbosch and is an official seeding event for the Cape Argus Pick ‘n Pay Cycle Tour.

Taiwan woman indicted over smelly gift

A Taiwan young woman has been indicted for sending dog poop as a birthday gift to a colleague over a personal dispute, a newspaper said on Saturday. Liu Chia-pei (27) and Ma Wan-ching work in the same company in Taichung, central Taiwan, but often argue because Liu likes to have the air conditioning turned on all the time.
