Workers march on nuclear corporation

Nuclear Energy Corporation of South Africa workers marched to its offices in Pretoria on Wednesday to demand compensation for radiation illness, Earth Life Africa said. ”The company has been disputing that the people are ill and are delaying providing compensation for them,” spokesperson Mashile Phalane said of the 100 demonstrators.

Decision on Gibbs expected on Thursday

Herschelle Gibbs’s appeal hearing against a ban of two Test matches imposed on him for breaching the International Cricket Council’s code of conduct was concluded via teleconference on Wednesday. The hearing was conducted by former Australia captain Richie Benaud, who was appointed as the appeals commissioner.

China’s Hu vows to ‘purify’ internet

Chinese Communist Party chief Hu Jintao has vowed to ”purify” the internet, state media reported on Wednesday, describing a top-level meeting that discussed ways to master the country’s sprawling, unruly online population. Hu, a straitlaced communist with little sympathy for cultural relaxation, did not directly mention censorship.

Nadal stunned by Gonzalez

A stunned Rafael Nadal was turfed out of the Australian Open on Wednesday by Fernando Gonzalez as Kim Clijsters ended the dreams of Martina Hingis to set up a semifinal showdown with Maria Sharapova. Russian third seat Nikolay Davydenko joined Nadal on the scrapheap, beaten by unfancied German Tommy Haas in five tough sets.

SA to decide on troops for Somalia by end of week

South Africa will decide before the end of the week whether or not to send troops to Somalia as part of an African Union peacekeeping mission in that country, Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs Aziz Pahad said on Wednesday. He said the issue is being discussed at the Cabinet lekgotla (meeting) being held at the Presidential Guesthouse in Pretoria.

I was not drunk, says McBride

Ekurhuleni metro police chief Robert McBride on Wednesday denied being drunk on the night he rolled his car in late December last year. McBride had left a metro year-end function after he played a game of football and was "not feeling well". But he said he has no "personal recollection" from the time he left the function.

Tsotsi star’s case postponed

Award-winning Tsotsi star Presley Chweneyagae appeared briefly in the Pretoria Magistrate’s Court on Wednesday when his case was postponed to February 27. His lawyer, Shane Lowley, asked the magistrate for the postponement on the grounds that the defence had no documentation and statements to work with as his client was arrested the previous day.

ICC to review role of match referee

The role of the match referee will come under scrutiny during an International Cricket Council (ICC) chief executives’ committee meeting in the United Arab Emirates later this week. The ICC’s executive board recommended last November that a paper be prepared following the Oval Test fiasco when umpires Darrell Hair and Billy Doctrove decided Pakistan had forfeited the match against England.
