The JSE remained rampant in noon trade on Wednesday, having roared to a record high on the back of higher commodity prices and positive world markets. By 12.11pm, the all share index was up 1,13% at 25 386,79 after reaching a record high of 25 438,49.

South African media company Naspers has acquired a 30% minority stake in Russian internet company Mail.ru for $165-million. The shares have been acquired from Digital Sky Technologies and Tiger Global Management, who remain shareholders of the company, Naspers said in a statement late on Tuesday.

A man armed with a pistol hijacked a Sudanese airliner on Wednesday and tried to force it to fly to Britain, but it diverted to neighbouring Chad where he was arrested and the passengers released unharmed. Chadian officials said the hijacker, a young Sudanese man, said he was trying to escape persecution in his own country.

South Africa’s targeted CPIX (consumer price index excluding interest rates on mortgage bonds) inflation was steady at 5% year-on-year in December, slightly below forecasts and easing pressure for higher interest rates, official data showed on Wednesday. Statistics South Africa also said headline consumer inflation — which includes mortgage costs — accelerated to 5,8% year-on-year in December.

World acclaimed female boxer Laila Ali is looking for male sparring partners to help her prepare for her world super middleweight title defence against Gwendolyn O’Neill at Emperor’s Palace, east of Johannesburg, on February 3. This was disclosed by the promoters of the fight, Golden Gloves Promotion, after Ali arrived in the country on Tuesday.

Unlisted South African retailer Shoprite on Wednesday announced that Brait, acting through Maxshell 107 Investments, has increased the offer to Shoprite minority shareholders to R28 per share. In terms of the revised offer, Shoprite shareholders will receive one New Retail Class B share valued at R28 for every Shoprite share held.

A domestic Sudanese passenger plane has been hijacked after leaving Khartoum by an unknown gunman who diverted the plane to Chad’s capital, Ndjamena, an airline official said on Wednesday. ”There are 103 people on board,” said Ahmed Salih, commercial manager of the Air West airline that operates the Boeing 737 plane.

Andriy Shevchenko and Frank Lampard each scored twice as Chelsea routed Wycombe 4-0 for a place in the final of the English League Cup on Tuesday. Zimbabwe’s High Court in Harare has postponed hearing Mail & Guardian chief executive Trevor Ncube’s case against the withdrawal of his Zimbabwean citizenship. The Zimbabwean government claims Ncube — who publishes the Standard and the Zimbabwe Independent in that country — is not a Zimbabwean citizen.
