Pakistan’s Mohammad Yousuf missed a double century by nine runs as the second Test against the West Indies ended in a high-scoring draw on Thursday’s final day. Yousuf made 191, his seventh hundred of the year, putting on 152 runs for the sixth wicket with Abdul Razzaq, who was out for 80, as Pakistan reached 461-7 before play was called off after tea.

Allegations of torture levelled against members of the South African Police Service by a cash-in-transit security guard are being investigated, police said on Thursday. ”Conduct of this nature — if [the] allegations are proved to be correct — is not only unacceptable, but also unconstitutional and criminal … Clearly, torture is out of question,” said Director Phuti Setati.

The United Nations nuclear watchdog’s 35-nation board of governors on Thursday indefinitely shelved Iran’s bid for technical aid for a reactor project due to fears it could yield bomb-grade plutonium, diplomats said. But the ruling left open the possibility of revisiting Iran’s request in the future.

South Africa’s intelligence agencies are investigating who leaked information in connection with the murder of mining magnate Brett Kebble, the government’s spokesperson Themba Maseko said on Thursday. Maseko said he found the leaks ”totally unacceptable”.

It is "vitally important" to acknowledge that provincial underspending of capital budgets among provinces had been on a declining trend over the past three years, Finance Minister Trevor Manuel said on Thursday. Three years ago –- in 2002 and 2003 — provinces underspent their capital budgets by R1,1-billion, noted the minister.

Information technology giant IBM on Wednesday said it agreed to pay -million to settle a class action lawsuit concerning overtime pay. International Business Machines said that litigation ”would have been lengthy, burdensome and expensive, and IBM chose to resolve it.”

The JSE was weaker in noon trade on Thursday due to profit-taking following the bourse’s strong run earlier in the week. However, the Thanksgiving holidays in the United States and Japan made for a very quiet market. By 12.03pm, the all-share index slipped 0,55%. Resources retreated 1,19% and the gold-mining weakened 1,02%.

Ethiopian Prime Minister Meles Zenawi on Thursday said his country had completed preparations for war with a powerful Somali Islamic movement after efforts for dialogue failed. Meles said the Islamists, who have declared a holy war on Ethiopian troops deployed to protect the weak Somali government, represented a clear threat to his country.
